Pied Wagtail winter territories

In the last few weeks, two Pied Wagtails have been feeding around the pond in my local park, staying near each other, but not too close, one chasing the other every now and then. I have watched this before, and managed to get photos last year (top shot, East Park, 9th January 2023). This behaviour, of two Pied Wagtails 'teaming up' to defend a territory during the winter, is quite typical of the species, and it was studied in detail in the early 1980s by Nick Davies and A.I. Houston along the river Thames near Oxford. The feeding territories studied were along the water, on both banks, where the wagtails pick small flies, spiders and beetles often washed onto the mud at the waterline, circuiting along one bank, then the other. The territory owner, usually an adult male, occasionally accepted an intruder as a 'satellite', often a female or juvenile, especially when there were enough resources to share. The satellite appeased the owner with a specific display, with bill and tail pointing up. The owners were more likely to tolerate the satellite when food was more abundant.

Although the presence of the satellite meant food resources needed to be shared in the territory, the satellite also helped with territory defence. The territories were defended vigorously, as the food resources depleted as the wagtails fed on the washed out insects, so intruders would reduce the feeding rate of the territory holders. Territory defence also involved calls, both of the intruding bird and of the residents. Davies and Houston quantified the benefits and costs of territory defence and accepting a satellite depending on the quantity of available resources.

It is clear that Pied Wagtails have a very flexible social behaviour. They gather in large, compact communal roosts during the night. Also, in places or at times where there is a glut of resources, for example during ploughing time, or emergence of insects, territory defence may break up and the wagtails might gather in loose flocks with little aggression.

In these photos of the East Park pair (above and top shot), the differences in plumage between the male (at the front) and the female behind are apparent.

I couldn't take a photo with both individuals from the 7th December at Pearson park together, but the difference in plumage indicates a male (above)...

Mistle thrush pairs defending berry trees

Several bird species hold territories during the winter, like Robins or Wrens defending their patch and singing through the winter. It is rarer that a pair will defend a winter territory. I have covered examples like Stonechats and Pied Wagtails before. The former usually include a male and a female, but they are unlikely to be a mated pair.

Earlier in the week I saw some Rowans heavy with berries along a street. A Mistle Thrush sat on a taller tree nearby. Then another individual flew from the berry tree, a pair! Later in my walk, I saw another pair of Mistle Thrushes near their defended cotoneaster (above). I then realised seen paired Mistle Thrushes in the winter before, near their defended trees. Are they a resident pair? Is a pair better than a single individual defending their berry larders?

The berries

Mistle Thrushes are well known for their winter defence of berry resources. Holly is one of the most important defended trees in the UK, followed by Hawthorn, Mistletoe, Yew and, later in the winter, Ivy. At Hull, I've seen Mistle Thrushes defend Holly, Yew, Rowan, Whitebeam and Cotoneaster. Often the same trees are defended year after year.

Defence behaviour

Aggressive tree defence behaviour is spectacular: The Mistle Thrushes use their loud rattling or churring calls, repeatedly and chases other birds away from their tree. Most aggressive interactions involve repelling other Mistle thrushes, but also any other thrushes, like Blackbird, and various finches, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Waxwings and even single Woodpigeons. Defence consists on chasing intruders, often silently and even if the birds were feeding on fallen berries under the tree. If there is a conflict then the individual might flick its tail and wings, their white underwings flashing, while churring persistently. Churring also occurs in flight during chases. Their defence is effective due to their large body size - they are the largest European thrush. Curiously Barbara and David Snow, who studied this behaviour in the UK note how the Mistle Thrush chooses who to attack carefully and it will chase only some species away so long as they are food competitors for the particular tree it is defending. For example Starlings are left alone in hawthorn and holly (whose berries they rarely eat) but chased from Ivy, which they eat. Greenfinches and Great Tits, are chased from Yew (they feed on the seeds) but not from Holly, which they don't eat. Eventually, after a few attacks, the local birds will learn to avoid the defended trees, and the Mistle Thrush just watches from a distance, and often this is how you'll find a Mistle Thrush, sitting on a vantage point near its precious tree.

Establishment of the guarded tree

Snow and Snow describe that the system of tree defence is established in October or early November, when song might be occasionally heard and other Mistle Thrushes are vigorously driven off until the territory is set. That way they can exclusively feed on these berries through the winter when they are needed. The defended trees become their winter larders, standing out on the landscape, packed full of berries when all other trees have been stripped out. Mistle Thrushes actually avoid feeding on the berries of their defended tree if they can, especially when the weather is mild and the ground is soft and they can rely on worms and other invertebrates. You need to pay attention to these trees full of berries later in the winter to recognise that the reason they are there is that a Mistle Thrush is just sitting atop a tree or aerial nearby, preening or resting. Unfortunately this effort will be worth nothing if a hard weather spell drives flocks of winter thrushes or Waxwings onto their area, then the Mistle Thrushes despite their best efforts may be unable to maintain their tree defence and lose their berry crop in a day or two. If the weather is mild, the tree can hold its berries until spring, and then, usually by the end of March, trees stop being defended. The Mistle Thrushes start nest building, often nearby. In the case of their defence of holly, the long-lasting berries, which can remain in the tree for up to nine months, are often used to feed their young. The hard work of defending the tree through the winter pays off not only to increase adult survival but as parental investment.

Pair defence

If Mistle thrushes stay to breed on the area near their defended tree, it would make sense that the pair defends the tree, rather than one individual. Snow and Snow describe how pair defence is more common and successful than single individual defence, although no data is given as to the proportion of pair defence. They say that "nearly all trees successfully defended throughout the winter were jointly defended by a pair of Mistle thrushes" and that  “pairs or individuals centred on a source of fruit which, if all goes well, will be defended through the coming winter.” In contrast, research on Mistle Thrushes defending Mistletoe clumps in woodland in Poland did not find evidence of pair defence. Could it be that pair defence occurs in some situations or for some berry sources and not for others? Anecdotal observations, however, suggest that members of a pair can defend different trees in the same area, and join forces if one of the pair loses their tree. On their article on Mistle Thrush defence Barbara and David Snow comment:

"When fruit territories are first established, in autumn, each defended tree may be guarded by a single Mistle Thrush or by a pair. It is probably common for members of a pair to establish themselves at neighbouring fruit-trees. Thus we had three cases where two Mistle Thrushes began by defending separate trees quite near to one another (60-180 m) and later, when one of the trees was stripped (as a result of the onslaught by Fieldfares and Redwings in the severe weather of December 1981), the two jointly defended the tree that still had fruit. In another case a pair of Mistle Thrushes jointly guarded the same holly tree from October or November in the two successive years, continuing throughout the winter in the first year but losing the fruit to invading Fieldfares and Redwings in the second year."
Snow and Snow indeed suggests that the same individuals, if they survive, may defend the same trees year after year, but their birds weren't ringed, so we can't know for sure. I'm surprised there is still so much to known about this widespread bird!

Herring Gull pair long call duetting

You have probably seen Gibbon pairs duetting in nature documentaries or videos. It is a territory display that shows how the pair is well bonded, and the turn-taking of the duetting is amazingly precise, the pair alternating calls to produce a single 'song' that advertises their presence and ownership of a territory. But you don't need to travel to distant tropical jungles to witness pairs duetting animals. Herring Gulls do it all the time. Because their long call is so familiar we tend not to pay much attention to it, but I was made to stop a couple of days ago when a pair landed on a chimney stack opposite my house (above). One of the pair seemed intent on long calling, and started to call, followed each time by its partner. Long calls become commonplace during the breeding season, when pairs defend territories or food, as it appears to have an aggressive function. Here is a sonogram of it. The gull starts calling with the neck pointing down, the calls well spaced, then the calling becomes faster in a staccato and the gull stretches its neck and points up and then the call dies in intensity. In 'The Herring Gull world, Tinbergen describes the call, saying that 'The voice of the herring gull is wonderfully melodious’‘There are few sounds as evocative, as stirring as the profound, plaintive beauty of their calls.' However, he missed the fact that it often occurs in pairs, there the pair message is not to each other, but to other gulls. The duetting has also been described in other gulls, like in the Western Gull.

Often, one of the pair starts the call, and the other joins in and they end the long call together, necks stretched, bills pointing up.
Why do gulls long call? They seem to do it when they have asserted their ownership of something (food, for example) or finish a squabble, or sometimes the whole Herring Gull colony calls and pairs joins together. I'm surprised I've found so little about this amazing behaviour other than anecdotal references to it, but this is a wonderful photo of a pair duetting.

Stonechat pairs in winter territories

Species like the Robin keep territories during the winter, with males and female individuals defending their own separate territories, while in the summer, territories are defended as a pair. There are some exceptions in which pairs defend winter territories, often in different areas that summer ones. One of these species is the Stonechat. In their wintering grounds on the coast and around the Humber estuary, it is frequent to encounter Stonechat pairs in the same area, feeding near each other and following each other, with no aggression (top shot, a pair at Alkborough, Lincolnshire, 11/12/2017). Of course, winter territory defence has nothing to do with reproduction, and often happens in areas that don't even hold breeding pairs in the summer. This unusual behaviour must offer some benefit to persist in the population, maybe allowing individuals to increase their chances of survival to predation or competition and to secure sufficient food resources.
A study of wintering Stonechats in the Negev desert (Israel), shed some light onto the behaviour. A total of 89 individuals were colour banded and followed through two wintering seasons. Their territorial behaviour was noted. The most surprising result of the study is that wintering Stonechat pairs are very fluid. Pairs often form after arrival to winter areas, and individuals rarely stay together all winter, instead pairs change frequently, with an average of just 4 weeks together per pair. In fact, none of the studied pairs stayed together all winter long and individuals arrived in the area and left at different times. This rules out that breeding pairs migrate together or settle on the same winter territory. Up to a third of individual are unpaired at any given time, but all associations are always between a male and a female. There were some aggressive interactions between members of a pair, which were commonly initiated by the male. Both males and females engaged in territory defence, with males more aggressive against intruders than females.

Why pair in the winter?
If pairs are not stable, don't migrate together, or don't form in preparation for the winter season, what is the point in defending territories as a pair? Males and female stonechats feed on the same prey, therefore there may be a cost on sharing a territory during the winter, when food resources may be very scarce. A possible benefit outweighing the cost may be joint territory defence: two individuals are better spotting and chasing away conspecific intruders or detecting predators and defending the territory against individuals of other species with similar food resources. In this study, individuals spent a lot of time defending the territory against Mourning Wheatears, but there was no mention of differences when pairs or individual Stonechats were involved.

Why male/female pairs?
These results don't clarify why associations are not between two males or two females defending a territory. The authors speculate that as Stonechats are sexually dimorphic, even in the winter, there may be constraints that prevent two males from living peacefully in the same territory, and the increased male aggressiveness may mean two females may be unable to defend a territory against a male/female pair.

A story of ringed Mute Swans

Last Wednesday 1st of November I went to Pickering Park. There were six Mute Swans. The resident cob (841 yellow ring), followed by the resident pen (ringed 842, top shot) was busy busking towards a white swan in the lake, who tried to avoid him and ended up preening on the bank at one end. It was a polish variant one, possibly a young of last spring, and when it came out to the shore I could see it was also ringed (red 182Y).
There were also three brown-feathered young swans, starting to moult into adult plumage. Just one of them was ringed (red 537). I assumed they were offspring of the resident pair. One of the brown young kept near the polish one being chased, joining it on the shore.

On Sunday 5th I went to Pearson Park. I was pleasantly surprised to find a mute swan, brown, not ringed. After a while I realised that there was another mute swan, white, on the other side of the pond. The small lake at Pearson Park has very rarely held swans, and not for too long. The last one I saw there was a juvenile from November 2005 to March 2006, when another two appeared in the park before all departed. I casually checked for rings, as I often do, and after some trying I managed to read it. I was surprised to find that the white one was the same that was being chased at Pickering Park, 182Y! The brown young wasn't ringed, but its plumage development is consistent with the one keeping near 182Y at Pickering, so both birds must have left the lake together, possibly an incipient young couple?

The swans are getting a lot of attention at Pearson Park. I think the brown one is a male, as it occasionally fluffs up its neck which looks thick in comparison to the other. Still there today, being fed by locals. There is currently a good empty breeding territory at Oak Road lake, it would be good if these two moved there!

Encounters of the Sparrowhawk kind

I treasure encounters with Sparrowhawks as they are quite secretive and alert birds which don't like being seen. Today I managed some sightings of a pair in my local park. First I heard a call 'kikikikiki!' and I saw a female landing on a tree. The view was quite obstructed and unfortunately, she flew off as I tried to get a better view. 
Then, a while later, in the same area I spotted the male. Not sure how, possibly a blue tit alarm call alerted me. He had some prey, what looked like a small bird, and was plucking it.
 He flew off, carrying the prey in his talons, and I wandered after him towards some big trees where he had disappeared. Then I saw the pair together, high up the crown of one of the largest trees in the park, a poplar (top shot). Fortunately the beautiful light made up for the distance to take some photos. The male started preening. I couldn't see if the female had the prey now. Male Sparrowhawks hunt for the female while she incubates.

 On my way back from work I looked longingly at the poplar. No Sparrowhawks to be seen there. But then, beyond the tree, high in the sky, the pair was circling together, playfully chasing and soaring.

Standing pretty

In the low winter sun, this magpie was tree-topping, displaying her contrasting black and white plumage, a typical territory-owner behaviour. They will 'tree-top' on aerials and buildings alike in towns. This one also regularly 'tail-flirted': a quick bow and tail flick, which is very noticeable and draws attention. Magpie's apparently black plumage has structural iridescent colours, blue sheen in the wings and green and purple in the tail tip - as shown in this tail feather - which are shown during displays and aggressive encounters. Breeding, territory-owner magpies have the brighter and greener iridescent hues than non-breeders. Plumage brightness in birds especially in body parts that are displayed during territory defence or during fights, reflects the owner's health and attractiveness, so their display advertises not only territory ownership, but its good body condition, so that potential challengers can assess it, and potentially avoid fights that they might be likely to lose.

On Magpie marriages

As in other corvids, like Ravens and Carrion Crows, non-breeding magpies flock together. The non-breeders tend to be young birds, while territory holders, which breed, are more likely to be older. There is a hierarchy in the flock, and the dominant birds are more likely to be the next in line in obtaining a territory. Magpies form pairs in the non-breeding flock.
This morning, I witnessed my second ever 'great Magpie marriage', one or the most puzzling Magpie behaviours. A group of seven magpies (top shot) were high on a tree, calling, a short call, 'chak!' and bowing with wings half spread, displaying, pecking the branches, or chasing around the tree, but mostly watching each other.

This behaviour, which usually takes place in the winter, in sunny mornings (although it was quite dark and cloudy today) was traditionally interpreted as the way Magpies form pairs before nest building starts. Tim Birkhead, in an article for British Birds, quotes this passage from Darwin's book 'The Descent of Man':

The common magpie (Corvus pica, Linn,), as I have been informed by the Rev. W. Darwin Fox, used to assemble from all parts of Delamere Forest, in order to celebrate the "great magpie marriage." [...] They then had the habit of assembling very early in the spring at particular spots, where they could be seen in flocks, chattering, sometimes fighting, bustling and flying about the trees. The whole affair was evidently considered by the birds as one of the highest importance. Shortly after the meeting they all separated, and were then observed by Mr. Fox and others to be paired for the season.

Birkhead's research with the Magpie population of Rivelin's Valley in Sheffield showed that instead of a pair formation congregation, this behaviour, is instead a territorial challenge by the dominant non-breeding pair. The rest of the flock attend to witness the event and, although the territory owners often keep their territory, in some cases they are ousted by the dominant non-breeders.

The bristle head crows

Carrion Crows have a complex social structure. Territory-owning Carrion Crows remain paired year round, often flying and feeding together or not far from one another. They remain near their nest during the breeding season, although they may range wider outside this period. Birds that don't hold a territory form part of a loose flock that roosts communally, usually in large trees. Both male and female of a pair participate in territory defence, keeping other crows (or potential predators) away from the nest. Males have a more prominent role: if a male loses his mate he is able to defend the territory until he remates, but a female losing his mate will also lose her territory, as she would rapidly be evicted by other pair.
In one of my local parks there is a very high density of Crows. There are several territories, but the park is also the main ranging area of the non-breeding flock (where there is also a winter roost). There are a lot of interactions going on, but without ringed birds, it is hard to make sense of what is actually happening. Yesterday, I observed several interesting interactions. First, a Black-headed gull appeared most annoyed with a Carrion Crow and mobbed it repeatedly, dive-bombing on it when the crow tried to stop on an aerial. The crow did not vocalise and deftly avoided the gull attacks. Later, I heard the rattling call of a crow and watched a chase between two crows, one of them calling with the call I usually associate to mobbing a raptor. Crows, it appears, can use this vocalisation to fend off conspecifics.
 Finally, I watched a Crow it an amazing display: its head feathers raised, bill pointing down, looking really at its best. After taking a few photos, I realised it's partner was walking nearby using the same posture. Today I learned about this display in 'The Crows' by Franklin Coombs. It is called the 'Bristle head' display. It is a territory-owner display, used in territory boundaries to signal their occupancy, and also aimed at intruders within the territory. Both members of the pair display while they walk about. There is no vocalisation. Territory intrusions mostly occur during the spring, but there is also a peak in October-November.
 I can only presume that this pair of crows are a pair ot territory owning breeders. They do look in great shape!

The summer Blackcaps

At the end of April, the arrival of migrant Blackcaps is marked by their beautiful fluty song. Males arrive a few days earlier than females and settle in their breeding territories. I heard the first one in the park on the 19th of April. Blackcaps usually sing from cover in trees and bushes, and the rapidly sprouting leaves will make it more difficult to spot them singing as the spring avances. Today I found a female in the territory where the male had been singing. She was very busy in a tall Sycamore tree, Acer pseudoplatanus, picking aphids from under the leaves, stretching and balancing on the fine branches. The male wasn't far, singing and feeding on aphids like her.

Carrion Crow cawing display

I haven't blogged on Carrion Crows this year at The Rattling Crow, and that needs to be amended. So today, I bring you a sequence from this morning, when I documented a Cawing Display. This is a series of movements carried on when cawing from a prominent perch, often by territory holders. The whole body arches and bows as the same time that they call loudly, giving the impression that they put all their might into it. This pair were sitting initially close together and I thought they were getting ready to preen each other, but then they must have spotted an intruder in their territory, as they started performing the cawing display in amazing synchrony. Each display involved cawing and bowing three times, while fanning their tails, and keeping their belly feathers raised. I noticed that in many of the photographs (see the top one, in the middle of a caw) the nictitating membrane - which makes their eyes look cloudy - was drawn at the same time that they called, something that is only possible to notice with photographs.

The intruded came closer and both birds called noisily and gave it chase.
Carrion Crows pair for life, which is often not that long (average 4 years, with a maximum recorded age of 9) and the pair remains together all year round. Only territory holders breed, with one year old birds and non-territory holders often moving in a flock and intruding in territories in search of food, leading to squirmishes with the territory holders, in which both members of the pair participate.
